The first FIFA game to touch the XBox 360, it marked the refinement of the franchise. It stripped down the available teams and instead focused on the four European leagues as well as the Mexican Clausura and national teams. FIFA 08 furthers the online portions of the game, keeping in line with the growth of the multiplayer market. Additional gameplay additions include 'Be a Pro Mode', which gives the players the ability to play a match as only a single player in the team, besides the goalkeeper. Overall, the game also sees a decrease in the speed of each match.

 

FIFA 09

 

Containing perhaps the largest assortment of improvements from any of the FIFA games, this one contains hundreds, according to the game's producer. An addition to the gameplay is the responsiveness refinement, which allows for an increased measure of control over the ball and a new collision system that takes into account the speed, weight and power of the two players that collide. The goalkeeper has also seen its own improvement as they now utilize better positioning, recovery and reactions.

 

The weather system has also been improved to allow for rain, snow, day, dusk and night matches, dependent on the stadium. Manager mode does not see the weather changes. Again, this is not an exhaustive list, but these are some of the major additions and changes.

 

FIFA 10

 

The latest in the franchise, FIFA 10 brings about many new additions to the Manager Mode that many players have welcomed. A new Assistant Manager can sort out your team for you while you focus on the the larger gameplay. Furthermore, sponsors are less important, while the club's board of directors are more so, due to their ability to dish out whatever wages they feel your team deserves. The Auto-Resolve option for matches now takes into account the team's overall strength, rather than randomly choosing a winner.

The Madden Curse: A History

Probably the most anticipated xbox game of 2010 is the new Madden. For more than 20 years, this franchise has been an undeniably big hit. Every year, the EA Sports team visits the NFL draft in order to get head-shots of the new players in their new uniforms as soon as possible. The game has become so popular that tournaments where professionals play head-to-head for loads of money have made it onto television for our viewing pleasure. For the first time in the series' history, two players graced the cover of Madden NFL 10. Both teams from SB 43 are acknowledged, with Troy Polomalu of the Steelers and Larry Fitzgerald of the Arizona Cardinals. In the Steelers' first game of the season against the Tennessee Titans, Polamalu suffered a medial collateral ligament sprain while blocking a field goal. He didn't return.

 

One would imagine teams and players would have learned their lesson by now. Athletes are notoriously superstitious, and next time Madden comes a callin', most would be better off to just decline. Whether you're just as superstitious, you can't deny the historical evidence of the Madeen curse's negative impact.

 

The History of the Madden Curse:

 

2002: QB Daunte Culpepper was honored with a Madden 02 cover appearance folliowing his team's final four appearance in 2000. He followed this up by missing the last five games of the 2001 season with a hurt knee, and his team missed the playoffs.

 

2003: As the 2003 cover athlete, St. Louis Rams running back Marshall Faulk had an ankle injury all season and failed to reach 1,000 rushing yards for the first time since 1996, while the Rams team went 7-9 and missed the playoffs.

 

2004: The Falcons finished 5-11 in 2003 when their youg star dual-threat QB missed the entire season due to injury. Guess what? He had been featured on that year's Madden.

 

2006: After taking a break in 2004, the curse was back at it for the 2005 season. Donovan Mcnabb was the cover athlete of Madden 06 and wouldn't you know, he suffered a sports hernai in week one, causing him to eventually get sidelined for the second half of the year.
